photonics in 5 minutes!

International day of women and girls in science

february 11, 2025

10:30 CET

Immerse yourself in the world of photonics thanks to 4 ICFO female scientists, who will tell in 5 minutes in an attractive and inspiring way why photonics is important for their research and society in general. You can also send them your questions about science and their careers.

This event is aimed at students between 9th and 12th grade (second cycle of ESO and bachillerato) and will be in Spanish.

Photonics in 5 minutes! is organized in the framework of ICFO Women in Science Month to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, joining the Iniciativa 11 de Febrero.

General information

10:30-10:40:  Welcome and introduction to ICFO and photonics

10:40-11:00: Flash talks by the speakers

11:00-11:30: Q&A session – the speakers will answer live the questions from the audience.

The event will be on YouTube Live. You don’t need any additional program or app to stream the event and interact with us: you just need a computer with internet connection.

You can send us your questions in advance at outreach@icfo.eu or write them in the live chat during the event.

If you’re attending the event with your students from the school, we have some additional recommendations:

  • Connect the computer to a large screen so that the students can have a better view.
  • Connect external speakers to the computer in order to improve the audio quality.

SPEAKERS

María García-Parajo

Jacqueline Martínez García

Pre-doctoral researcher at ICFO

Jacqueline Martínez García is a PhD student in Photonics. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics (UDLAP, Mexico) and a Master’s degree in Photonics (UPC). Her research focuses on the use of photonics in the health field to measure blood flow and oxygen saturation.

Joana Fraxenet

Julia Bergmann

Pre-doctoral researcher at ICFO

Julia Bergmann began her career in physics at the University of Hamburg, specialising in experiments with ultracold atoms. She subsequently turned to theoretical physics. She is currently pursuing her PhD with Leticia Tarruell (ICFO) and Alessio Celi (UAB), investigating ways to simulate gauge theories with Rydberg atoms.

Blanca Belsa

Valentina Gacha

Pre-doctoral researcher at ICFO

Valentina Gacha was born in Bogotá, Colombia. She graduated as a Chemical Engineer from the Universidad de los Andes. Later, her passion to better understand the world of materials took her to Brazil where she completed a master degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Three years ago she began her PhD at ICFO, in the photovoltaic nanostructures group, where she is studying the configuration of different materials, to capture the sun’s energy and thus generate different solar fuels.
