photonics in 5 minutes!

Science week ’24

november 8, 2024

10:30 CET – online

Immerse yourself in the world of photonics thanks to 4 ICFO scientists, who will explain why photonics is important for their research and society in general. They will have each 5 minutes to give their engaging and inspiring talks. You can also send them your questions about science and their careers.

This event is aimed at students between 9th and 12th grade (second cycle of ESO and bachillerato) and will be in Spanish.

This edition of Photonics in 5 minutes! is organized to celebrate the Science Week ’24.

General information

10:30-10:40:  Welcome and introduction to ICFO and photonics

10:40-11:00: Flash talks by the speakers

11:00-11:30: Q&A session – the speakers will answer live the questions from the audience.

The event will be on YouTube Live. You don’t need any additional program or app to stream the event and interact with us: you just need a computer with internet connection.

You can send us your questions in advance at outreach@icfo.eu or write them in the live chat during the event.

If you’re attending the event with your students from the school, we have some additional recommendations:

  • Connect the computer to a large screen so that the students can have a better view.
  • Connect external speakers to the computer in order to improve the audio quality.

SPEAKERS

Antonio Sampaoli

Predoctoral researcher at ICFO

Antonio Sampaoli graduated in Theoretical Physics in 2021 at the University of Bologna (UNIBO). His master study has been mainly in quantum field theory. He did his final thesis in String theory phenomenology.

He is currently doing the PhD in the Photon Harvesting in Plants and Biomolecules (PHPB) group at ICFO, where he studies spectroscopical properties of light sensitive biomolecules.

Shanti Maria Liga

Eric Calatayud Gómez

Project engineer at ICFO

Eric Calatayud Gómez is a specialist in bionanotechnology, bioinformatics and Raman spectroscopy.

He works as a laboratory technician in the super-resolution microscopy and nanoscopy unit (SLN) at ICFO, where they explore the use of advanced microscopy to obtain high-resolution images in biomedical research.

María Hernández Ruiz

Predoctoral researcher at ICFO

María Hernández Ruiz is a PhD student in the Atomic Physics and Quantum Optics group at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO).

Her passion for physics led her to study physics at the University of Granada and during her career, she developed an interest in photonics. Currently, she studies the miniaturization of magnetic sensors and their applications in biophysics.

Federica Beduini

Lucía Castillo García

KTT-Outreach team at ICFO

Lucía Castillo García is a physicist with a background in instrumentation for high energy particle physics experiments and obtained her PhD in Physics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland.

She is part of the ICFO´s Outreach team and is coordinating ICFO´s educational activities to inspire young students in the field of photonics.
