Quantum in 5 minutes!

Science week ’25

november 14, 2025

10:30 CET – online

Immerse yourself in the world of quantum science and technology thanks to 4 ICFO scientists, who will explain why quantum physics is important for their research and society in general. They will have each 5 minutes to give their engaging and inspiring talks. You can also send them your questions about science and their careers.

This event is aimed at students between 9th and 12th grade (second cycle of ESO and bachillerato) and will be in Spanish.

This edition of Quantum in 5 minutes! is organized to celebrate the Science Week ’25 and in special the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

General information

10:30-10:40:  Welcome and introduction to ICFO and quantum physics

10:40-11:00: Flash talks by the speakers

11:00-11:30: Q&A session – the speakers will answer live the questions from the audience.

The event will be on YouTube Live. You don’t need any additional program or app to stream the event and interact with us: you just need a computer with internet connection.

You can send us your questions in advance at outreach@icfo.eu or write them in the live chat during the event.

If you’re attending the event with your students from the school, we have some additional recommendations:

  • Connect the computer to a large screen so that the students can have a better view.
  • Connect external speakers to the computer in order to improve the audio quality.

SPEAKERS

Paula Alonso

Predoctoral researcher at ICFO

Paula Alonso is a PhD student at ICFO, where she researches how to make communications more secure using technologies capable of resisting attacks from quantum computers. She studied Physics at the UAB and specialized in Quantum Sciences and Technologies, completing her master’s thesis at SandboxAQ.

Shanti Maria Liga

Roger Tormo

Postdoctoral researcher at ICFO

Roger Tormo holds a degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and completed his undergraduate thesis at the University of Technology Sydney. He also has a master’s degree in Nanophysics from Grenoble Alpes University and a PhD in Photonics from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at ICFO in the Quantum Nanoelectronics and Nanomechanics group, where he studies the quantum properties of carbon nanotube vibrations.

Tomás Fernández Martos

Predoctoral researcher at ICFO and Quside

Tomás Fernández Martos graduated in Physics (UAB) and has a master’s degree in Quantum Sciences and Technologies (UB). Currently, he is pursuing an industrial doctorate in Photonics focused on Quantum Information Theory, jointly between ICFO and Quside Technologies S.L., a spin-off of ICFO that markets quantum random number generators.
