photonics in 5 minutes!

International day of women and girls in science

march 6, 2026

10:30 CET

Immerse yourself in the world of photonics thanks to 4 ICFO female scientists, who will tell in 5 minutes in an attractive and inspiring way why photonics is important for their research and society in general. You can also send them your questions about science and their careers.

This event is aimed at students between 9th and 12th grade (second cycle of ESO, bachillerato and professional training) and will be in Spanish.

Photonics in 5 minutes! is organized in the framework of ICFO Women in Science Month to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, joining the Iniciativa 11 de Febrero.

General information

10:30-10:40:  Welcome and introduction to ICFO and photonics

10:40-11:00: Flash talks by the speakers

11:00-11:30: Q&A session – the speakers will answer live the questions from the audience.

The event will be on YouTube Live. You don’t need any additional program or app to stream the event and interact with us: you just need a computer with internet connection.

The event has been rescheduled to March 6, 2026 due to external circumstances.

You can send us your questions in advance at outreach@icfo.eu or write them in the live chat during the event.

If you’re attending the event with your students from the school, we have some additional recommendations:

  • Connect the computer to a large screen so that the students can have a better view.
  • Connect external speakers to the computer in order to improve the audio quality.

SPEAKERS

María García-Parajo

Carmen Rubio Verdú

Group Leader at ICFO

Carmen Rubio Verdú embarked on her academic journey studying Chemistry, but midway through her bachelor’s studies, she discovered her true passion for physics. She pursued a PhD studying magnetic atoms at CIC nanoGUNE in San Sebastián (Spain). During her postdoctoral position in the United States at Columbia University, she focused on researching the electronic properties of twisted graphene structures and investigated the role of electronic correlations. In 2023, Carmen started her own research group at ICFO with the objective of understanding the origins of superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene.

Joana Fraxenet

Georgina Tresànchez Lacorte

Pre-doctoral researcher at ICFO

Georgina Tresànchez Lacorte is a PhD student in the medical optics group at ICFO. She studied industrial engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, specializing in biomedical engineering for the detection of pulmonary pathologies. Her master’s thesis focused on optical sensors. At ICFO, she has been able to combine biomedical engineering and optics to improve non-invasive diagnostics in newborns.

Blanca Belsa

Pilar Pujol

Pre-doctoral researcher at ICFO

Pilar Pujol was born in Reus and enjoys cycling, playing sports, painting, art, and nature. Her curiosity led her to study physics and mathematics. Physics allows us to understand the universe, and mathematics is its language, but it is also a game and an incredibly powerful and fascinating tool.
