Photonics plays an increasingly central role in a variety of applications for Life Sciences, most notably in the biomedical field. We conduct cutting-edge research and development in bio and nanophotonics with a special focus on advanced imaging modalities and techniques. Non-invasive diagnosis and pioneering therapies are examples some of the photonic applications that are targeting critical health problems such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
The strategic importance of Light in the biomedical fields at ICFO is reflected at different levels. ICFO hosts four main research lines, one of which is fully dedicated to biophotonics. In addition, ICFO hosts the Light for Health Focus Program that has a major impact in both the national and international community in terms of divulgation and training of the state-of-the-art techniques in photonics applied to life sciences. ICFO holds also a powerful programme on a variety of advanced and super-resolution light microscopy techniques and functional imaging with applications that range from single molecule to medical imaging.
